Marawara air assault combines Afghan-U.S. security efforts

KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan (July 2) – A combined forces operation to search for weapons caches and insurgents, lead by the Afghan National Security Forces with Coalition forces support, continued in the Marawara district, today.

The operation had begun, with an air assault combined force of about 700 ANSF and Coalition forces, at 3 a.m. near the town of Daridam, June 27.

The town Daridam and its surrounding district was becoming a safe haven and staging base for insurgents under the command of Qari Zia ur-Rahman, a known Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi insurgent and Taliban leader. He and his forces were involved with attacks on both civilian and Coalition forces, which included an improvised explosive device attack that killed five U.S. Soldiers, June 7.

Both the Afghan government and Coalition forces are focused on reinforcing security and providing humanitarian supplies to the civilian population.

Once operations conclude, follow-on efforts will include projects to help re-establish and support critical services and economic development.
