NURISTAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army Commandos executed an air assault on the town of Awlagal June 23, clearing it of Taliban fighters.

Reacting to intelligence reports, the Afghan assault force swept the area. Initial reports indicate 20-25 insurgents were killed with no ANA casualties. The ANA Commandos took deliberate steps to avoid hurting any innocent civilians during the operation.

“The ANA commandos executed a well-planned, well-executed strike, taking the fight to the enemy,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Randall Harris, deputy commanding officer, Task Force Bastogne. “Nuristan is safer today due to their skill and devotion to the security of the people.”

Coalition forces provided air support and supplies for the operation. The support helped the Commandos clear Taliban from Awlagal, disrupting insurgent operations throughout the region.

In a phone interview June 23 with Governor Jamaluddin Badr of Nuristan, he said, “I am very pleased with the operation in Awlagal. It had been a gathering place for the enemy.” Badr went on to say that he was also pleased with the coalition support the commands received.

Coalition forces continue to cooperate closely with the Afghan National Security Forces as they continue to secure the Afghan population.
