NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan police foiled an attempted attack on the Shirzad District Center by anti-Afghan fighters in the Nangarhar Province June 14.

An estimated 50 to 100 Taliban launched an attack on the district center throughout the day.  Local Afghan police moved into position and defended it, causing the Taliban to break off their attack and leave the scene.

“The Afghan police at the Shirzad District Center easily defeated the Taliban attack,” said Lt. Col. James Sisemore, 1st Special Troops Battalion commander, Task Force Bastogne.

Two Afghan policemen were killed and two wounded during the district center’s successful defense.  Two Taliban were also killed.

Six police vehicles that had to be abandoned during the attack were later destroyed by a coalition force’s airstrike

This recent success continues to illustrate the steadfast vigilance of the ANSF and their coalition partners in defending the Afghan people.
