BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (Sept. 18, 2009) – International Security Assistance Forces continued gradual repositioning today in an effort to place more emphasis on populated areas, this time moving a company from Barge Matal village at the request of the Nuristan provincial government.
The unit deployed to Barge Matal, a village of approximately 2,500 residents, on July 12 after central government officials requested support to enhance local Afghan National Security Forces capabilities leading up to the Aug. 20 national elections.
Over the last two months ISAF Soldiers provided training to the ANSF, conducted numerous Shuras with local leaders and villagers and supported the community through numerous humanitarian assistance efforts. The ISAF Soldiers also assisted in developing better coordination between the local government and ANSF, a key to improving and maintaining security conditions in the remote area.
Repositioning these forces marks another move in step with the new strategy delivered by the ISAF commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, which places an emphasis on protecting the people by focusing on more populated areas.
