Why We Serve is an ongoing series highlighting the service and sacrifices made daily by the Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines of Regional Command-East. After more than a decade of conflict in Afghanistan, this series is dedicated to telling the service members’ story. Since 9/11, millions of Americans have volunteered to fight on behalf of their country. Regardless of branch, rank, age, gender or
ethnicity, these service members share a common bond of service. These are their stories, and this is why they serve.

PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Pfc. Nicolas Bakker, a medic assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team “Rakkasans,” 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), serves because he wanted to do his part for the United States, as well as take care of troops in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Bakker enlisted out of high school with his mind set on being a medic.

Sanders, a native of Dickson,Tenn., and mechanic assigned to Company E, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team "Rakkasans,” 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), does his part for his country while deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Sanders comes from a large military family and felt it was his turn to step up and serve.
