Army Chief of Staff visits Fort Riley troops in Afghanistan

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Raymond T. Odierno made a two-day trip to eastern Afghanistan Sept. 18 – 19, where he received briefings from combat commanders and visited Soldiers deployed with the 1st Infantry Division.

Soldiers of the Fort Riley, Kan., based Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, along with troops from the same division’s 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, are at the forefront of the Army’s efforts in Afghanistan and are deployed to three provinces in the country’s eastern region.

Odierno’s visit included stops at Bagram Airfield and Forward Operating Base Sharana, where he presented 1st Infantry Division Soldiers serving there with Purple Hearts and combat awards.
