PRT inspects recent flood damage

Nathan Lipscomb, Kunar Provincial Reconstruction Team) KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Heavy rains flooded the Kunar river July 25-26, affecting thousands of people, destroying more than 800 homes and damaging infrastructure.

The Kunar Provincial Reconstruction Team attended an emergency meeting with the Kunar Provincial Government July 26 in an effort to assist. 

Engineers and state department workers from the PRT surveyed damage at four major bridges the following day: Nowabad, Pashad, Khas Kunar and Chowkay.

Other than erosion found around some of the pylons, all but one of the bridges withstood the pounding waters without any obvious structural damage, and the bridges will be reinspected once the water recedes further, according to the PRT engineers’ after action report.

The Kunar PRT will continue to work alongside the Kunar Provincial Government in support of the Afghan people.
