NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – U.S. Army Sgt. Victor E. De La Cruz, from San Diego, Calif., with Troop B, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, gets awarded a Silver Star for his heroic actions during the attack on Combat Outpost Keating in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, Oct. 3. Once the enemy contact was made, De La Cruz quickly got into position as a team leader to direct fire and led his team in the direction of the enemy’s main assault. He repeatedly exposed himself to accurate small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire in order to point out enemy positions to his Soldiers and move to an Improved Target Acquisition System position. Due to his technical proficiency, he destroyed four enemy positions, which resulted in a lull in the enemy fire that allowed his section to regain the tactical initiative. Gen. George W. Casey, the Chief of Staff of the Army, presents De La Cruz’s award, on Forward Operating Base Fenty in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, April 30. (Photo by U.S. Army Pfc.
