KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan- An Afghan National Police Officer stationed in Chawkai District in Kunar province, Afghanistan engaged in a very unusual high-speed chase, which ended with him confiscating a large amount of ammunition from insurgents.

The ANP Officer received an alert from his headquarters to be on the lookout for a white station wagon with black trim loaded with a large amount of ammunition in boxes covered by vegetables traveling through the district.

The officer saw the vehicle matching the description driving down the road and attempted to stop it. The suspect car did not heed the officer’s request and drove on.

The officer then hailed a taxi, jumped in the back seat and told the driver to follow the white station wagon.

The chase went through a bazaar and near an International Security Assistance Force command operating post and would have kept on going until the station wagon blew one of its tires up and nearly rolled over.

The two suspects jumped out of the damaged vehicle and fled into a nearby village.

Because the officer did not have backup, he did not pursue the suspects. Instead, he went over to the vehicle to investigate its suspicious cargo.

He moved several heads of cauliflower and discovered two white tin boxes underneath the vegetables.

The officer opened one of the boxes, revealing a burlap sack full of rocket propelled grenade rounds, RPG boosters and an RPG launcher.

He radioed back to his higher headquarters and was instructed to drive the vehicle back to the ANP station. Once he arrived at the station, ANP officers opened the boxes and counted 22 RPG rounds, 16 RPG boosters and one RPG launcher.

The ANP notified ISAF at a nearby COP, who sent out a patrol, law enforcement personnel, and explosive ordnance disposal personnel to the police station to document and lift fingerprints off the weapons.

The ISAF members left the items with the Chawkai Police, who will send officers to investigate the details of the weapons.
