BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – The Bagram French Air detachment that enforces the System Interim of drone MALE, Medium Altitude, Long Endurance, renamed Harfang, will blow out its first birthday candle on Afghan soil this February.
Harfang is a reconnaissance drone without weapons, guided from a distance by experienced fighter pilots, transport pilots or a navigator. In Afghanistan, it fulfils surveillance and reconnaissance missions for coalition forces every day. Takeoff and landing phases are completely automated.
The Harfang detachment is composed of more than 40 people. Among them are mechanics, crew members with pilots, and intelligence officers. Civilian personnel give technical assistance and 18 servicemen and women are in charge of the support of the detachment.
During their first year, Harfang detachment performed more than 180 flights among those more than 165 were operational missions. Additionally, more than 1,700 flight hours and 1,200 hours of video have been recorded.
