KABUL, Afghanistan (June 12) – International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service members provided emergency medical care to eight Afghan civilians when a local truck collided with an ISAF vehicle in the Chas Kunar District of Kunar province yesterday.
Despite the best efforts of ISAF medical personnel, four Afghans died as a result of the accident.
ISAF service members provided initial medical care at the accident scene until Afghan National Police (ANP) and a local ambulance arrived.
Two Afghans died at the scene. Six injured Afghans were subsequently transported to Asadabad for medical treatment.
Due to the severity of their injuries, four of the Afghans taken to Asadabad were assessed as requiring more extensive medical care. This care was initially provided at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wright.
Medical personnel determined that two of these Afghans required further specialist care. One Afghan was flown to Bagram Air Field medical facility, and is undergoing treatment. Tragically, despite being flown to Jalalabad for surgery, the other Afghan died of injuries.
Of the patients remaining at FOB Wright, one later died of injuries, while the other was treated for minor wounds.
The two Afghans sustaining the least injury remained at Asadabad hospital, where they were treated by medical staff.
“It is always a tragedy when innocent civilians are injured or killed in an accident like this. We value the lives of all Afghans and will continue to treat the Afghan citizens injured at Kunar,” said US Air Force Captain Mark Garabedian, Medical Officer, Bagram Air Field.
The incident is currently under investigation.
