KABUL, Afghanistan (June 07) – Nine insurgents were killed and a number of munitions confiscated as Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) repelled a complex attack near the Pakistan border early yesterday morning, 05 June.  The incident took place in the Sabari District Centre, Khost province.

Attack helicopters were called to assist the ANSF and ISAF ground troops as they engaged the militants. The aircraft also dropped munitions on the enemy forces.  No Afghan civilians were harmed during the incident.

After the attack was successfully thwarted, ANSF and ISAF troops recovered various munitions from the insurgents, including two rocket propelled grenade launchers, 16 rocket propelled grenades, four 82mm high explosive mortar rounds, three PKM machine guns, six AK-47 assault rifles, two pistols, nine fragmentary grenades, 23 30-round AK-47 magazines and four handheld radios.

As a result of the incident, two Afghan Security Guards were killed, one wounded and two Afghan National Policemen received injuries.

“It is the heroic actions of the Afghan people and their security forces that will defeat this insurgency, as demonstrated by their recent actions at the Sabari District Centre,” said Brigadier-General Richard Blanchette. “Their professionalism and skill in making their country a safer place will be honoured and remembered.”

Emergency medical treatment was provided to the wounded policemen and they were later evacuated to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Lightning for further evaluation. From FOB Lightning, one of the policemen was then transferred to Bagram Air Field for more advanced medical care.
