KABUL, Afghanistan — A Coalition forces vehicle and a van carrying Afghan civilians were involved in a traffic accident here Friday at about 11:15 a.m. on Highway 1.

Both vehicles were traveling east when the van attempted to move in to the left lane of traffic and struck the side of the Coalition vehicle.  Coalition forces were unable to swerve to avoid the van because of a median separating the east-bound and west-bound lanes of traffic.  After the collision, the van skidded off the side of the highway and struck a roadside shop.

The incident is under investigation, and Coalition forces have reported it to the Afghan National Police.

“We regret this incident and express our condolences to the families and people involved,” said Col. Jerry O’Hara, U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesman.
