KABUL, Afghanistan – Coalition forces killed three militants and detained five suspected militants during operations targeting Taliban and Haqqani terrorist networks in Ghazni and Khost province, Tuesday.

The operation, in Andar District, targeted a known Taliban sub-commander with ties to former Taliban commander Mullah Sharif, who also has direct ties to the foreign fighter network in Ghazni.  As the force approached the targeted militant, he and two others, attempted to evade the force and took up fighting positions in a nearby building.  The force pursued the militants and gave them explicit instructions to surrender.  Disregarding the instructions, the three militants displayed hostile intent and attempted to engage the force.  Realizing the threat, the force engaged with small-arms fire and killed them.

Also in Andar, Coalition forces targeted a Taliban militant believed to finance terrorist operations and suspected to have ties to foreign fighter facilitators in the region.  The force detained the targeted militant and two others without incident.

In Khost, Afghan and Coalition forces netted the targeted Haqqani associated militant during an operation to disrupt the flow of Arab militant fighters into the region.  The combined force searched the compound and detained one additional suspected militant during the operation.
