KABUL, Afghanistan – The Ministry of the Interior of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in conjunction with Coalition forces are conducting a joint investigation into an incident that occurred early yesterday evening in Khost province involving Coalition forces and suspected armed men.

The Coalition forces stopped three suspect vehicles on a road northeast of Khowst District.  The occupants of the vehicles got out of their vehicles and fired on the Coalition forces who returned fire with rifles and helicopter gun fire.  There were secondary explosions in the vehicles, and 14 armed men were killed.  Numerous ammunition belts and small-arms weapons were recovered from the vehicles.

Investigators are on the scene, gathering the facts, and when more information is available, it will be released.
