PAKTYA PROVINCE, AfghanistanArmy Engineers clearing routes of improvised explosive devices and mines continue to receive information from Afghans in the vicinity of their routes on the whereabouts of these explosive hazards.Soldiers of the 70th Engineer Battalion, stationed out of Fort Riley, Kan., accompanied the Afghan National Police on a mission in the Mota Khan District of Paktya Province to clear IEDs along heavily-traveled routes Dec. 18.  During their mission, the chief of police in the district received a phone call from the district sub-governor stating an Afghan resident of the district reported an IED on their route. At the location of the IED, ANP found two stacked anti-tank mines with wiring devices.  The soldiers neutralized the device.

“Afghan citizens notifying Afghan National Security Forces of IEDs in their areas demonstrates their trust and confidence that the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will respond,” said Army Maj. Christopher Grose, operations officer, 70th Eng. Bn.
