BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Elements of the 1st
Brigade, 205th Afghan National Army Corps, advised by Coalition
forces, defeated an insurgent ambush today as they conducted a combat patrol in
Uruzgan Province.
The ANA-led force was conducting a combat patrol nine-kilometers (5.4 miles) northwest of Firebase Cobra in northwestern Uruzgan Province when more than 30 insurgents attacked the patrol. The insurgents employed small-arms, machine gun, RPG and mortar fire from multiple prepared fighting positions as the friendly patrol neared Sarsina Village.
The combined force repelled the initial attack with small-arms and crew-served weapons. As the insurgents reinforced their positions with additional fighters, the ground force commander requested Coalition close air support. Precision guided munitions were employed on positively identified Taliban positions, killing numerous insurgents.
“The enemies of peace and stability continue to use the holy month of Ramadan as an opportunity to conduct violent acts against the forces sworn to protect the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force-82 spokesman. “The Coalition asks that residents of this area continue to provide information, as many honest Afghans have, to your local ANA or ANP to keep Ramadan a safe and secure religious holiday.”
No ANA, Coalition or non-combatants were reported injured or killed during the fighting.
