BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Two militants were killed, one wounded and detained and six more detained by Afghan and Coalition forces early this morning in Zabul Province during an operation to disrupt extremist activities in the area.
The combined force made their way to compounds in the Shajoy District where credible intelligence indicated violent extremist forces were hiding.
During the course of the operation, the combined force came under small-arms fire from individuals in one of the buildings suspected to house fighters. Returning fire, Afghan and Coalition members shot and killed two militants and wounded another one.
“Afghan and Coalition forces exercised extreme discipline while under fire,” said Maj. Chris Belcher, Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman. “They used effective communication and applied the necessary amount of force needed to eliminate the threat to the team while minimizing collateral damage.”
The wounded militant was treated on-site and then evacuated for follow-on medical care.
The combined team performed a search of the compound and surrounding area and found significant numbers of weapons and ammunition.
The weapons and ammunition were destroyed to prevent future use.
The detained militants will be questioned as to their involvement in extremist activities.
There were no indications of injuries or deaths to non-combatants.
Damage occurred to some buildings during the course of operations.
