BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – The Khogyani Afghan National Police, advised by Coalition forces, detained an IED cell member named Nurullah, and one other in an operation designed to disrupt insurgent IED activities in the Nangarhar Province early this morning.
Credible intelligence led the ANP to Nurullah’s compound in the vicinity of Omarkheyl Village, Khogyani District. Nurullah is known to be extensively involved in the making and placing of insurgent IEDs in Nangarhar province. He is suspected of directing and participating in the IED attack that killed three Coalition servicemembers, one interpreter and wounded one other Coalition servicemember in the vicinity of Bar Kalakney Village Aug. 12.
During the ANP-led search of Nurullah’s compound, the ANP discovered a substantial amount of IED making material and a 50 pound bag of opium. The IED material and opium were destroyed on site by the ANP.
“With Nurullah detained, the ANP has greatly increased the security situation in the Khogyani District,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force-82 spokesman. “The Afghan National Police capturing the main culprit of the IED attack that killed three of our servicemembers is a great success in the on-going battle against the enemies of peace and stability.”
No shots were fired and no ANP, Coalition or non-combatants were injured or killed during the operation.
