PFC Bluhm was the gunner on the platoon leader’s truck as his platoon served as the QRF for B Troop. The QRF was called to evacuate three casualties when the patrol received fire from the north. PFC Bluhm returned highly effective suppressive fire, until his MK19 malfunctioned. He immediately transitioned to the M249 SAW and continued to suppress and destroy the enemy. Shortly thereafter, Bluhm’s platoon was attacked again and because of his highly successful suppressive fire, he began receiving direct sniper and small arms fire in addition to RPG rounds from different enemy positions. On his own initiative and without regard to his own personal safety, PFC Bluhm took control of the vehicle and ordered the driver to maneuver the truck to provide cover for friendly forces. Thanks to his efforts, no additional injuries were sustained at the site.
PFC Bluhm’s heroism under fire exemplifies the Warrior Ethos. His professionalism, selfless commitment to mission success, and care for his fellow Soldiers were instrumental to the mission being a success.

Extreme temperatures pose a challenge to every mission, but our Soldiers and ANSF partners continue to adapt and sustain relentless pressure against Afghanistan’s enemies, and provide Afghanistan’s people improved security, expanded governance and reduced INS intimidation. Our winter operations focus
